Beyond the Boardroom · Lessons that shape how we lead

Life marks.
Be kind in the minute you’re in.

We all carry marks—some visible, some hidden. Life can change before we know there was something we were supposed to prepare for, and the way we treat one another becomes part of the story that remains.

We spend a lot of our lives preparing for the future.

We make plans. Build schedules. Save money. Create contingencies. Try to anticipate what could go wrong.

Sometimes we nail it. Sometimes we miss the mark. And sometimes life changes the plan before we even knew there was something we were supposed to prepare for.

At 11 p.m., life looked one way.

I’m going to make this personal for a moment. Not to make it sad. This is really about perspective—and the reminders life gives us when we least expect them.

Recently, my mom had a stroke.

At 11 p.m., life looked one way. By 4 a.m., it looked completely different. She was found on the floor struggling to speak.

We were unbelievably unprepared for it. Not because we didn’t care. Not because we hadn’t thought about the future. We simply had not prepared for that future, on that night, in that way.

She is recovering, and I’m incredibly grateful for every step forward.

Life can change in a minute.

The marks that tell a story.

The experience made me think about what I call life marks.

The wrinkles. The scars. The gray hair. The spots on our skin. The broken bones. The tired eyes. The limp from an old injury. The lines on someone’s face that tell a story you know nothing about.

THE STORIES PEOPLE CARRY

Some marks can be seen. Others walk quietly beside us.

01

Visible marks

Wrinkles, scars, gray hair, tired eyes, and the physical evidence of a life fully lived.

02

Invisible marks

Worry, grief, pressure, fear, and the private struggle hidden inside an ordinary day.

03

Beautiful marks

Laughter, love, resilience, shared memories, and the moments that helped shape who we became.

04

Marks we leave

The words, choices, patience, and grace that become part of another person’s story.

Then there are the marks no one can see.

The parent you are worried about. The child who is struggling. The pet you are scared to lose. The relationship under strain. The diagnosis you haven’t shared. The financial pressure. The sleepless night. The phone call you never expected. The goodbye you weren’t ready to say.

The worry you carried into a meeting while everyone else thought you were simply having an ordinary Tuesday.

We all have life marks. Some come from beautiful moments. Some come from difficult ones. Some come from choices. Some simply happen to us.

THE PART OF THE STORY WE RARELY SEE

Someone can look completely present while carrying something very heavy.

The agenda does not show it. The status report does not explain it. The meeting invitation does not make room for it. But it is still in the room.

A reason to live—and lead—differently.

None of us knows what may be waiting around the next minute. That is not meant to be depressing. I actually think it is a reason to live differently.

Say the kind thing. Make the phone call. Take the picture. Laugh a little longer. Forgive something that probably isn’t worth carrying.

And maybe, at work, think for one extra moment before you speak. Very little that happens at work is so critical that we cannot pause long enough to consider how our words will land.

GRACE IS NOT

Avoiding disagreement

It does not mean lowering expectations, withholding feedback, or pretending the work is good enough when it is not.

GRACE IS

Protecting dignity

We can challenge the approach, ask for better, and hold one another accountable without diminishing the person.

A little grace does not lower the standard. It raises the standard for how we treat one another.

We rarely know the full story.

Someone may pass along a request they themselves received only moments earlier. Someone may ask a question without having all the context yet. Someone may miss something. Someone may simply be having a harder day than we realize.

We can disagree. We can challenge an approach. We can ask for better. We can hold one another accountable. And we can still do all of it with respect.

Words leave marks too.

Long after the meeting ends. Long after the email thread is forgotten. Long after the project is finished.

Some of the marks we leave on one another will disappear quickly. Others may stay for years. We get to choose more of those than we realize.

BEFORE THE NEXT RESPONSE

Use one minute well.

01

Pause

Is the urgency real, or did the emotion arrive before the facts?

02

Consider

Could there be context, pressure, or a burden you cannot see?

03

Respond

Say what the standard requires without leaving an unnecessary mark.

THE REMINDER

Life can change in a minute.
Be kind in the one you’re in.

Have a little grace. You never know what someone is carrying. And you never know what the next minute may bring.
